UFC’s Harris tests positive for steroids, suspended

UFC heavyweight fighter Walt Harris has been suspended four years for testing positive for multiple steroids, the UFC announced Wednesday.

Harris, 40, tested positive for drostanolone, its metabolite and testosterone of exogenous origin in samples collected June 24, 2023 and July 12, 2023, per a UFC release. In an Aug. 6, 2023 sample collection, Harris tested positive for anastrozole, as well as drostanolone and its metabolites. There was also testosterone of exogenous origin found, which was determined to be a new administration since the previous positive test based on its levels.

Drostanolone and exogenous testosterone are considered anabolic steroids, while anastrozole is an aromatase inhibitor. All are banned at all times by the UFC.

The adjudication of Harris’ case was done by Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD), the UFC’s new anti-doping program following a departure from USADA last year. The new program is being run by decorated former FBI agent George Piro. Harris is the first fighter to be suspended under the new program, which uses the independent Drug Free Sport International (DFSI) to collect samples.

Harris (13-10, 1 NC) has lost three in a row. The fighter from Alabama was on a four-fight unbeaten streak prior to the recent skid.
