Judge: First ejection of career ‘very surprising’

NEW YORK — Aaron Judge has accomplished plenty during his nine-year major league career. He set the American League record for home runs in a season. He won the AL MVP award. He was named the 16th captain in New York Yankees history.

And not once was the 32-year-old slugger ever ejected — until Saturday.

Judge was tossed for the first time in his career, in his 870th game, in the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium against the Detroit Tigers after arguing a called third-strike call.

Judge voiced his displeasure with home plate umpire Ryan Blakney as he turned around and walked away. Blakney then threw Judge out of the game with the Yankees leading 5-3.

Judge ended his day 2-for-3 with a double. It’s just his second multi-hit game since April 14 in what has been a frustrating season thus far.

Trent Grisham replaced Judge in center field.
